Not All Sugar Substitutes are a Good Choice

Here at SoPure Stevia, we make it our business to be as informed about sugar substitutes as we possibly can. If you’ve read any of our previous posts, you’re probably already aware that we are not the biggest fans of added sugars. The amount of sugar that the average person now consumes is at such a high concentration that most people don’t’ even know what their bodies feel like without all of this sugar in their system. Added sugars have been directly linked to a wide variety of health issues and, in our opinion this is just not acceptable. Luckily, more people are starting to realize that ingesting large amounts of sugar is not good for them, so they look for alternatives to satiate their cravings for sweet things. Sucralose has become a popular option among people, however, we have to ask, is it the best option?

What is Sucralose?

Sucralose is the only artificial sweetener on the market that is directly derived from sugar.  To accomplish this, sucralose manufacturers substitute one part of a sugar molecule with chlorine in order to create a substance that is around 600 times sweeter than regular table sugar. Sucralose was approved by the FDA in 1999 as a suitable and safe substitute to sugar and sucralose can be used as a replacement for sugar in almost every food and beverage. Sucralose, like stevia, passes through the body without being metabolized, meaning that it is calorically neutral to the human body. Sucralose has been heavily tested in order to assure that it is a safe substance to consume for humans, however, an independent Italian study found a possible link between sucralose consumption and the development of leukemia.

Should I Choose Stevia or Sucralose as my Sugar Substitute of Choice?

While the answer to this question is largely up to the individual, we here at SoPure Stevia stand behind our statement that stevia and stevia extracts are still the best choice when searching for an alternative to sugar. While sucralose has gained wide popularity over the years, the fact that it is manufactured as opposed to occurring naturally in nature raises some concerns in our book. Stevia extracts do not require molecular manipulation to make them safe for human consumption and, in our minds, this makes stevia sound like a much more appealing option. Stevia has been used for hundreds of years as a natural sugar substitute, whereas sucralose had to be manufactured in a lab. Given the choice, we feel that naturally occurring substances are more desirable than those that are artificially manufactured.
